A mechanical device which combines a main scale and a vernier scale whose least count is much smaller than that of a main scale is called a vernier callipers.
while measuring length of given object say cylinder. look for vernier scale division which coincide with any one of the main scale division.. this is called as vernier coincidence division. ( V.C.D)
