Collenchyma, in plants, support tissue of living elongated cells with irregular cell walls. Collenchyma cells have thick deposits of cellulose in their cell walls and appear polygonal in cross section.

Collenchyma is a simple permanent tissue and a living mechanical tissue and provides both mechanical strength an elasticity.It prevents tearing of leaves.It allows the growth of leaves as it is capable of elongation. Chloroplast containing collenchyma manufactures sugar and starch.
