A chemical process in which a substance reacts with oxygen to give off heat and light is called combustion.

There are three types of combustion. They are:

  • Rapid combustion - This type of combustion produces very large quantities of light and heat. Examples are burning of stove.
  • Spontaneous combustion - The combustion occurs on its own. Examples are the lightning striking a forest and causing forest fires.
  • Explosive combustion - A very fast combustion which produces light, heat and sound. Examples are bursting of crackers.
