Comets are smaller heavenly bodies which revolve around the Sun.  Comets can be recognised because of its shining tail which contains several gases.  Long period comets are rarely seen beacuse of greater orbital periods. Example - Hailey's Comet which is visible after every 76 years.  Short period comets are closer to the Sun due to which they are seen at regular intervals of time.
