In a common ion effect ionization is reduced by adding a small amount of strong electrolyte into a weak electrolyte.
This effect supresses the degree of dissociation of that weak electrolyte in which the strong electrolyte is added.
The main thing that is followed in this effect is that both the strong and weak electrolytes should have a common ion in them.
For example :
Taking a strong electrolyte Sodium Acetate ( CH3COONa ) and adding it to a weak electrolyte Acetic Acid
( CH3COOH ).
The strong electrolyte will supress the weak electrolyte.
