Communalism :-

Communalism refers to an ideology that integrates communal ownership and federations of highly localised independent communities. In other words communalism is theory of government or a system of government in which independent communities get chance to participate in a federation.

One more explanation of communalism is that 'Communalism means that people of same religion have communal cultural, economic, political and social'. Communalism is a severe threat to the harmony and secular spirit of a country.

The process of emergence of communalism in Indian society :-
The foundation of communalism in India was laid down by the British rulers.
The stagnant growth of Indian economy during the British rule was an important factor responsible for growth of communalism in India. It was deeply rooted in and was an expression of the interests and aspirations of the middle class in a social set up in which opportunities for them were inadequate.
It is, however, important to note that a large number of middle class people were remained free from the communalism even in the 1930s and 1940s. The British Government used communalism to counter and weaken the growing national movement and the welding of the Indian people into a nation. It was presented by the Colonial rulers as the problem of the defence of the minorities. Hindu-Muslim disunity was sighted as the reason for the continuation of the British rule. They favoured one community against the other in services and promotions. The British policy of acting late to crush the communal violence also contributed to the growth of this phenomenon. The British policy of separate electorate was another factor.
After the independence, the political parties prompted by the political considerations, took decisions, which also promoted the communalism in India. All the political parties try their best to attract the minorities' votes in the elections by doing false promises. Even nowadays, this type of politics is prevailing in India.

In South Asia, communalism is a term used to denote attempts to construct identity of groups of people based on their religious or ethnic identities by inciting strife and stimulating communal violence. This has been a bane for the society since colonial rule in India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
Communalism or sectarianism is not restricted to South Asia, it has erupted periodically in other countries of Asia, Africa, Australia, Europe and the Americas.
Generally, it is found that the major communities of different regions try to practice communalism to overpower the minor communities or use it as a weapon to usurp the latter's property. The minorities are sometimes the perpetrators of communalism when they feel they are not getting their rightful dues.
