Communalism involves thinking along the following lines:-
1.People belonging to the same.religious community share the same interests, needs, and likes.
2. Any differences between the people in these contexts are irrelevant and immaterial.
3. People belonging to different religious communities do not share any similarity in any context.
4. Any similarity that people from different religions have is irrelevant and does not.matter at all.
5. Religion is the sole basis of social community.
6. Religion is expressed in exclusive and partisan terms.
The different forms of communalism in Indian politics are:-
1. The most common form of communalism in politics is in everyday beliefs. This is so common that we do not know about it even when we believe in it. This can take.various forms such as religious prejudices, stereotypes against members of a religion, etc.
2. Using religion to mobilise public opinion. This can be done by appealing to the people in terms of religious sentiments by using sacred symbols, religious leaders and plain fear to get people belonging to the same religious group together.
3. In an extreme form, communalism can take the form of desire of dominance of majority religion or the need to form separate political units.
4. In its worst form, communalism involves communal riots, massacres, and other forms of violence based on religious differences. India and Pakistan suffered some of the worst communal riots at the time of Independence.
