Answers
In composite fish culture, a combination of five or six fish species are used in a single fish pond. The species are selected in such a way that they do not compete for food among themselves as they have different food habits. Due to this the food available in all the parts of the pond is used. This automatically increases the fish yield from the pond.
Advantages of composite fish culture :
(i) It helps to get a variety in fish yield.
(ii) Food in the pond gets evenly used up due to different varieties of fish having different food habits present in a pond.
(iii) Fish do not compete for food as all type of fish get their kind of food. (any two) Hormonal stimulation ensures the supply of pure fish seed in desired quantities.
Composite fish farming:
In order to obtain high production per hector of water body, fast growing compatible species of fish of different feeding habits are stocked together in the same pond so that all its ecological niches are occupied by fishes. This system of pond management is called mixed fish farming or composite fish culture. It is also known as polyculture.
Advantages:
i) Maximum fish production is obtained in this method, with lesser cost.
ii) All ecological zones are exploited for achieving maximum yield.
iii) All available food in the pond is effectively utilised.
iv) The variety of fish produced is much higher as compared to monoculture.
