It is the feature available on Microsoft Excel to format one or more cells according to the conditions.

Using this feature we can apply the following formatting effects :-

  • Number format,text and dates
  • Font, font style and font colour
  • Border colour and style
  • Fill colour and pattern

To apply conditional formatting follow the following steps :-

  1. Go to Home tab styles group.
  2. Go to the option conditional formatting.
  3. Click highlight cells rules.
  4. Choose which type of condition you want such as greater than, less than, between, etc.
  5. A dialog box appears.
  6. In the Criterion box given specify the value or choose the cell address.
  7. Select the formatting you want.
  8. Choose ok.

The formatting will appear in your worksheet.

To remove it follow the steps below :-

  1. Go to home tab styles group.
  2. Select the option conditional formatting.
  3. From the dropdown box select clear rules.
  4. Choose the option accordingly as you want from clear rules from selected cells, clear rules from entire sheet, etc.
