HOCN and OCN- are an example of a conjugate acid-base pair. The only difference between the two is a proton (H+). All acids have a conjugate base and all bases have a conjugate acid. From the list of molecule/ion pairs below, click on those that are conjugate acid-base pairs.

Table of acids and their conjugate bases

Acid Conjugate base

HCl Hydrochloric acid Cl− Chloride ion

H2SO4 Sulfuric acid HSO − 4 Hydrogen sulfate ion

HNO3 Nitric acid NO − 3 Nitrate ion

H3O+ Hydronium ion H2O Water

Hope this will help you

Conjugate acid-base -

The compound which is formed from each other by mutually gaining or losing protons are called conjugate acids and bases pairs.

  • The stronger acid and weaker base form one conjugate pair and the stronger base and weaker acid form another pair.
  • A conjugate acid has one extra H atom and a positive charge than that of a base from which it is formed.
  • A conjugate base has one less H atom and one more negative charge than that of the acid from which it is formed.

Example of conjugate acid-base -

Some examples of conjugate acid-base are as follow

HClO₄ ⇆ H⁺ + ClO₄⁻

H₂SO₄ ⇆ H⁺ + HSO₄⁻

HCl ⇆ H⁺ + Cl⁻

HNO₃ ⇆ H⁺ + NO3⁻

In all these one is losing proton, while the other is gaining a proton.
