As the atomic size increases, the basicity of oxides and hydroxides decreases due to the lanthanide contraction, there is decrease in the size of lanthanide cations that increases the polarizing power of cations

The gradual decrease of atomic size from left to right in lanthanides is called "lanthanide contraction".

The crystal structure and other properties of these elements become very close and similar.So it become difficult to separate them from a mixture.
