Before writing about Urdu Poetry, I would consider that you already know how to speak Urdu Language.
According to a renowned Urdu Poet Jaun Elia,
“ایک شعر خوش لباس الفاظ کا مجموعہ ہوتا ہے”
For Reading or even writing Urdu Poetry You must understand what the rhythm is and Poets call it “Behr” or “Wazan” you can say.
Why is it compulsory for reading it?
Because, you are going to read what other poets wrote so it is important you should read it in the flow/rhythm. Otherwise, audience won’t find it as good as it was because Poetry without rhythm is simply an Essay or a Quote.
Why is it compulsory for writing it?
If your poetry isn’t in a rhythm it won’t be considered as Poetry it would rather be thought an Essay.
Let me give you an example of Wazan/Behr in Urdu Poetry. I’ll present a poetic verse of Syed Nasir Kazmi:
غم ہے یا خوشی ہے تو
میری زندگی ہے تو
Here is the behr for this couplet:
فاعلن مفاعلن
غم ہے یا = فاعلن، خوشی ہے تو = مفا علن
غم ہ یا خوشی ہ تو = فا علن مفا علن
ــــ
مے رزن = فا علن، دگی ہ تو = مفا علن
میری زندگی ہے تو = فاعلن مفاعلن
ــــ
By the example above, You can see, for both verses in the couplet you have to maintain the same Behr.
Correct pronunciation of Urdu words is going to help you break down the words into the relevant behr otherwise, your words breakdown thing won’t be good enough. It is a proper maths in itself.
