Answer:

The second definition; "a group of people who are related by marriage or a common ancestor." Does that mean parents who are separated would be considered a family? Third definition; a group of plants or animals, and a fourth definition; a group of related things. Would a group of toys be a family?

I liked the traditional definition, but then I question what constitutes a parent? Out came that large blue book again. An animal or plant that is related to its offspring. I could continue with what is an offspring and what does "related to" mean.

I am related to cousins I haven't seen in years but I do not consider them part of my family except if we are doing a family tree. My mother invited my sister's friend to join our family when her parents died. Marilyn became part of my immediate family.

My mother and mother-in law were part of my family. My sister was very much part of my family. People in group homes may consider themselves part of a family yet biologically they are not related.

I also considered my dog part of our family yet she certainly did not fit the dictionary's descriptions. Even our turtle became part of our family. We cared for it, bathed it each day and it always had steak for dinner.

In fact when it died we gave it a formal burial in a small jewelry box in our backyard. I even had my husband dig up the box after the kids went to bed, discard our turtle down the toilet bowl and redig its grave. I knew when the children would wake they would run to exhume the box and yup, our turtle went to heaven, the box was empty. So what does the word family really mean?

Twenty years ago I would have stated about the sacredness of the word marriage. It was important to be married in a Jewish temple by a clergyman. I once read a couple who is married in a religious ceremony has fewer divorces. I wonder who wrote those statistics.

People whom for many reasons cannot officially be married but live together are not entitled legally to share possessions or obligations. I have a friend who had to divorce her husband or she would have lost everything, when in his fifties, he had to be institutionalized. Other friends announced after 25 years of living together they were getting married. Did it make any difference in their relationship? Of course not, but financially they were advised they should go through a formal marriage. The examples go on and on.
