Non-contact force

A non-contact force is a force which acts on an object without coming physically in contact with it. The most familiar non-contact force is gravity, which confers weight. In contrast a contact force is a force applied to a body by another body that is in contact with it

Example

Magnetism is an example of a non-contact or action-at-a-distance force. These are forces which can act on an object without being in physical contact with it. The force of gravity is another example. Thus, gravity will pull a raindrop down to Earth without any tangible physical link between the Earth and the drop.

★ Concept :-

What are the units of force?

  • Force is measured in newton in S.I system and dyne in C.G.S system. one newton is equal to 10⁵ dyne.

Now, let us know about the types of forces.

Forces can be classified as :-

  • Contact force and

  • Non- contact force.

★ Required answer :-

Contact force :-

  • Contact forces represent the result of physical contact between two objects, where one of the objects exerts force on the other.

  • Contact force is the force that acts only when two bodies are in physical contact or two bodies interact with each other either directly or through connector or through rigid body.

Some examples of contact force :-

  1. Muscular force.
  2. Frictional force.
  3. Normal force.
  4. Tension force.

Muscular force :- Muscular force is the force that is caused by the action of muscles of the body on the object.

Frictional force :- Friction always act in the opposite direction to the motion of the body.

  • If you stop pedalling your bicycle on a level road, you observe that its speed decreases gradually. This is due to friction.

  • Friction depends on roughness or smoothness of the surface.

  • The friction is directly proportional to the roughness of the surface.

  • Friction is more if the surface is rough.

  • Friction is less if the surface is smooth

Normal force :- A body exerts force which is equal to its weight in downward direction when it is placed on a surface. But the body does not move or fall because the surface exerts an equal and opposite force on the body normal to the surface. This force is called the Normal Reaction Force.

  • Simply the force that a solid surface exerts on any object in the normal direction i.e., perpendicular to the plane of the surface is called normal force.

Tension force :- Gravitational pull(weight) acts in downward direction and an upward force along the string which support the stone against gravity. This upward force in the string is called tension or tensional force.

  • The force that is transmitted through a rope, string or wire when pulled by forces acting from opposite sides is tension in the string.

★ Non- contact force :-

  • It is the force that acts when bodies are not physically in contact with each other. It is also called as field force or force at a distance.

Some examples of non - contact force :-

  1. Magnetic force.
  2. Gravitational force.
  3. Electro-magnetic force.

Magnetic force :- The force exerted by a magnet on magnetic substances is called magnetic force.

  • So, contact is not required for the magnetic forces to come into play.

Gravitational force :- The force of attraction of Earth on an object is called Gravitational Force.

In fact, the attractive force between any two masses in the universe is called Gravitational force.

  • It is a non contact force as it is applied without any physical contact.

Electro-magnetic force :- It is the force of attraction or repulsion exerted between charged particles.

  • It can be either between the same charges (repulsive, this means they repel each
  • other) or between opposite charges (attractive, this means that they both attract each other).
