What is contesting election for the legislative bodies for more than one constituency?

A candidate can contest elections for more than one constituency in the same elections, but he cannot occupie both the legislative seats.

In case he wins both the legislative seats, he has to leave either one of them within 6 months.

This is popularly known as political spread betting.

Once the candidate leaves the other seat, by elections are held to fill the vacancy.

This falls under the section 33 of the Representation of People Act 1951 in which a single person can contest for the polls more than one by-elections for the maximum of two seats.

Earlier, there was no limitation but now they have put to the two.
