Due to high metabolic rates, birds have a greater rate of oxygen consumption than others. Birds lungs have a continuous movement of oxygen rich air over respiratory surfaces during both inspiration and expiration. But the air sacs present in their respiratory system allow unidirectional flow of air through their lungs hence the air moving through their lungs is fresh air with high oxygen content.
