Collectivization was a policy of forced consolidation of individual peasant households into collective farms called “ kolkhozes ” as carried out by the Soviet government in the late 1920's - early 1930's. Stalin's Five-year Plans dealt with industrial production, but something needed to be done about the food supply so Stalin introduced collectivization. After years of resistance and famines Stalin eventually executed those who resisted, or sent them to labour camps.
THE MAIN PURPOSE OF COLLECTIVIZATION -
Under collectivization the peasantry were forced to give up their individual farms and join large collective farms (kolkhozes). The process was ultimately undertaken in conjunction with the campaign to industrialize the Soviet Union rapidly.
