During copulation, the male mounts the female from behind. Both sexes hold their tails to the side and turn back the feathers around the cloaca (the common opening of the bird's alimentary canal and excretory and reproductive systems), so that the swollen lips of the male's and female's cloacae can come into contact

  • Copulation is an animal sexual action in which a male injects sperm directly into the female's reproductive system.
  • Mating entails this. External fertilization is used by many aquatic creatures, but internal fertilization may have evolved in the Late Ordovician era in response to the necessity to keep gametes in a liquid medium.
  • Many vertebrates (including reptiles, some fish, and most birds) reproduce sexually by cloacal copulation (also known as cloacal kiss), whereas mammals copulate vaginally and many primitive vertebrates reproduce sexually through external fertilization.
