Answer :

Corey House Reaction -

This method can be used for preparation of an alkane containing even as well as odd number of Carbon atom.

In this method, alkyl halide is treated with Lithium metal to form Alkyl Lithium. Alkyl Lithium on treatment with Cuprous Iodide gives Lithium Dialkyl Copper.

Lithium Dialkyl Copper on treatment with another molecule of Alkyl Halide gives an alkane containing odd no of Carbon atom.

CH_3-CH_2-Br+2\:Li\longrightarrow CH_3-CH_2-Li+LiBr

CH_3-CH_2-Li+CuI\longrightarrow (CH_3-CH_2)_2CuLi+LiI

CH_3-Br+(CH_3-CH_2)_2Culi\longrightarrow CH_3-CH_2-CH_3+CH_3-CH_2-Cu+LiBr

  • The Corey–House synthesis (also called the Corey–Posner–Whitesides–House reaction and other permutations) is an organic reaction that involves the reaction of a lithium diorganylcuprate (R2CuLi) with an organyl (pseudo)halide (R'X) to form a new alkane, as well as an ill-defined organocopper species and lithium halide .
