Epidermis and Cork Cells in Plants. The epidermis is usually made of a single layer of cells. The entire surface of a plant has this outer covering of epidermis. Corkcells are dead and do not have any intercellular spaces. The walls of these cells are heavily thickened by the deposition of suberin.Dec 8, 2015

Hi there

Your answer is : The epidermis is the outermost cellular layer which covers the whole plant structure, i.e. it covers roots, stem, leaves, flowers and fruit. Epidermis protects the underlying cells, prevents the loss of moisture from the leaves and stems. Epidermis allows gaseous exchange to take place which is necessary for photosynthesis and respiration. Epidermis also helps to absorb water and dissolved ions from the soil.
The cork helps to waterproof the stem and is worn off as the tree grows in thickness.
