  • Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV).
  • It is named as Corona because it appears as crown when seen under microscope.
  • It is deadly beacause it can mutate itself which makes the attacking drug ineffective.
  • Recently in China in mid-December of 2019, it had mutated and started spreading from human to human. Earlier it used to spread from animals to humans.

CAUSES:

Scientists believe that the disease could have originated from the Bungarus Multicinctus, a highly venomous snake at the Wuhan Food market(In Wuhan province of China) which was getting sold as bushmeat. The snake was suffering from this particular disease which in turn was affected by bite of bat .

Note: Bushmeat is obtained from wildlife species in forest including mammals, reptiles, amphibians and birds.

Effect:

  • As of data of 4 March,2020, 93,175 people around the world got infected. Out of them, 3203 people died and 50798 people got recovered.
  • In India, 21 people got infected and out of them 3 people got recovered.
