Corrosion:

Process of rusting of metal when exposed to air, water, moisture etc. Due to this it forms a layer above it's surface. This is known as Corrosion.

Example:

When Fe (iron) came in contact with external environment or air, water etc. then it develops a layer of Fe2O3 (Ferric oxide) on it's surface.

Due to formation of this layer metal becomes weak.

Prevention:

  • By painting.

  • By greasing or oiling.

  • By galvanisation.

  • By alloying to make it stainless stell.
