Answer:

when a metal is attacked by substances around it such as moisture acids etc it is said to corrode and this process is called corrosion

methods to prevent

  • painting
  • oiling
  • greasing
  • galvanizing
  • chrome plating
  • anodising
  • making alloys

Answer:

Corrosion is an all-too-common result of electrochemical reactions between materials and substances in their environment.

*ways to prevent corrosion:-

#Turn to non-corrosive metals such as aluminum and stainless steel.

#Keep the area around the metal surface dry.

#Use drying agents and moisture barrier products.

#Make sure underground piping is laid in a layer of backfill, such as limestone.

#Make sure any electrical components are cleaned regularly

#by applying paint on the surface.

#As oil and water do not mix with each other, oiling forms a protective coating for the metal and hence prevent it from rusting. Oil can penetrate the oxide-water on the metal and stabilize it.

Explanation:

Corrosion is a dangerous and extremely costly problem. Because of it, buildings and bridges can collapse, oil pipelines break, chemical plants leak, and bathrooms flood. Corroded electrical contacts can cause fires and other problems, corroded medical implants may lead to blood poisoning.

In the presence of oxygen, the corrosion of metals increases.

The metals placed higher in the reactivity series gets corroded more easily than the ones place below them.

The dissolved salts in water act as an electrolyte and hence the rate of corrosion is enhanced. For example, iron corrodes faster in seawater. The presence of pollutants, for example, NO2 and CO2 increases rusting.
