Corrosion is breakdown of material due to reaction . It is usually oxidation with air in the presence of water. Corrosion only occur when an acidic and basic material touches to the other material . the material that are included metal, plastic or wood.

The Fe2+ ions are further oxidised by atmospheric oxygen to Fe3+, and form hydrated iron oxide, expressed as

The process in which the metals are gradually eaten up by the action of air , water vapour or a strong chemical like an acid or a base is known as corrosion .

For eg - When iron metal is exposed in damp air for considerably period of time , a reddish brown colour compound known as rust is form over it . Rust is soft and porous and gradually fell off further exposing the iron metal to air . This process will continue until the whole metal is eaten up .
