When metal is attacked by air and moisture it get corrode and this is called corrosion .
Sacrificial protection is the protection of iron or steel against corrosion by using a more reactive metal. Pieces of zinc or magnesium alloy are attached to pump bodies and pipes. The protected metal becomes the cathode and does not corrode.

Answer:

Corrosion is the slow but continuous eating away of metallic components by chemical or electrochemical attack. That this is costly and destructive will be vouched for by any motorist.

Explanation:

Corrosion is a constant, indiscriminate and costly enemy of metal parts, especially when packaged for storage and distribution. Traditional anti-corrosion methods are messy, costly and can be hazardous to personnel and the environment. Too often, they are ineffective as well.

Globally the losses every year due to corrosion is estimated to be unimaginable US$ 828 billion per annum. i.e. US$ 2.27 Billion per day. (NACE)

Three factors govern corrosion.

• The metal from which the component is made.

• The protective treatment the component surface receives.

• The environment in which the component is kept.

Sacrificial protection is a corrosion protection method in which a more electrochemically active metal is electrically attached to a less active metal. The highly active metal donates electrons to replace those which may have been lost during oxidation of the protected metal.

Cathodic protection (CP) is a means to prevent corrosion by applying a flow of electrical current from an external source (anode) through the environment and on to the metallic structure that is being protected. This protective current changes the environment around the metal thus halting the corrosion reaction.
