What is corrossion? What are the factors which affect the process of corrosion?

  • Corrosion : It is a process of eating away of metals when exposed to the atmosphere surrounding it.

  • Ezplanation : Many metals when exposed to the atmosphere, react with air or water in the environment to form undesirable compound on their surfaces. In case if iron, the corrosion is called rusting. The red or orange coating that forms on the surfaces of iron when exposed to air and moisture is called rust. Chemically rust is a hydrated form of ferric oxide, Fe2O3 . xH2O.

Factors which affect corrosion :

  • Position of metals in e.m.f. series.
  • Presence of impurities in metals.
  • Presence of electrolytes.
  • Presence of CO2 in water.
  • Presence of protective coatings.
