Cross-pollination is the transfer of male pollen grains to the female part of the flower, often called the stigma. Pollen grains can be light enough to be released from the flower onto the wind, so as to reach the stigma of other flowers. Heavier pollen grains may float on water, or be carried by us and other birds, bees and animals to flowers nearby or far away, on our clothes, hair, feathers and fur, for example.

Cross-pollination happens between different flowers, that ripen the male and female parts at different times in the same field, so that the genes are mixed, and the resulting seeds may have a better combination of genes from both parents, rather than same parent.
