Answer:

Cross-Cannizzaro is a Cannizaro reaction where two different non-enolisable aldehydes react with each other in presence of a base to form an alcohol and a carboxylate ion. The difference lies in the fact that this reaction is not disproportionate and the compound which is oxidized easily gets oxidized while the other gets reduced.

The comparison of how easily a compound can be oxidized depends on the stability of its carboxylate ion. As an example, formaldehyde will oxidize to formate more readily than benzaldehyde to benzoate since the effect of cross-conjugation in benzoate reduces the stability of the carboxylate ion and this reaction will therefore proceed as,

C6H5CHO+HCHO+KOH→C6H5CH2OH+HCOO−K+
