Answer:

The splitting of five d-orbitals of metal atom /ion on the approach of the ligands towards the metal atom / ion for the purpose of bond formation is called crystal field splitting . those d-orbitals of central atom / ion which lie on the direct path of the liga nd ( e.g set in octahedral complex ) are repelled more than those which lie which lie away in between the axes x,y,z (eg t2 g set of dx y,dy z ,d zx orbitals in octahedral complex) the difference of energy between the two set eg and t2g is called crystal field splitting energy . if the value of ƥ is high complex , complex formed is low spin as the inner two d- orbitals hybridize with a and three p orbitals to give d2s p3 hybridization and the complex formed is inner - orbital complex m if the value of ƥ is low the two d- orbitals of nth shell mix up with ns and three np orbitals to give sp 2d2 hybridization and the complex formed is called outer orbital Complex .
