Answer:

Dal Khalsa president HS Cheema was reportedly detained for two hours at the New Delhi airport today on his return from Bangkok. He had gone to Thailand’s capital for a two-day UN meet.

His passport was impounded before he was allowed to go to his hometown, Fatehgarh Sahib. Cheema, on his way back home, told The Tribune over phone, “My passport was impounded without assigning any reason. Immigration officials told me they had orders from the higher authorities to take my passport. I have been told to see the regional passport officer after 10 days. I will move the High Court. I will write to the UN tomorrow, informing it about this unruly behaviour of the immigration authorities.”

Dal Khalsa spokesperson Kanwarpal Singh told the media, “We will not take this lying down. Undoubtedly, they (the authorities) will delay giving back the passport through bureaucratic rigmarole, but we will fight back. We will approach an international forum against such acts of injustice.”

The meet saw participants from South Asian countries, including Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, India and Pakistan, deliberating upon efforts that needed to be taken by religious leaders, actors, scholars and organisations to foster inclusive societies.

Organised by the UN office on Genocide Prevention and the Responsibility to Protect, the meet discussed good practices in these countries that need to be acknowledged and reiterated and bad practices that need to be challenged.

Cheema, who is also a human rights activist, presented his views on the situation in India with respect to Sikhs, Muslims, Christians and Dalits and the growing incidences of hate speech and “institutional injustice” against minorities.

He pleaded for UN intervention in India to set up a commission to review atrocity crimes against Sikhs and others and to propagate UN mechanisms to ensure more compliance by India and other countries.
