What is dam ? How do they help in water levels

A dam is a barrier that stops or restricts the flow of water or underground streams. They help people by reducing or preventing floods. During times of excess water flow,dams store water in thereservoir; then they releasewater during times of low flow, when natural flows areinadequate to meet waterdemand.
