Bacteria and fungi are the two types of decomposers. They help in the process of recycling of nutrients by decomposing various dead organisms such as plants and animals to form humus.
Decomposers are an organism, especially a soil bacterium, fungus, or invertebrate, that decomposes organic material.

▪ Bacteria and fungi, which are incapable of producing their food, live on the dead and decaying plants and animal bodies and are consumers of a special type called decomposers .
▪ Bacteria and fungi are consumers and feed mainly on the dead remains of plants and animals and decompose them. So they are also called decomposers .
When plants or animals die, the decomposers break down their bodies and reduce them to the nutrient substances they are made of .Thus, these nutrients are returned to the soil and get mixed with it. This maintains the fertility of soil and the soil would continue to support crops again and again.
▪ Bacteria and fungi decompose the dead plants and animal bodies into ammonia and other substances.
▪This ammonia is converted into nitrate by the nitrifying bacteria present in soil.
▪ These nitrates acts as fertilizers in the soil and are again absorbed by the plants for their growth.
➡ By the above process decomposers helps in the growth of plants ( Forests ) .
