Differentiation is finding the rate of change. The most common thing it is used for is finding the slope of a graph or the tangent to a curve. That is all you are ever doing, don't lose sight of that.It has applications like if you know distance and time, you can work out the rate of change of distance over time or velocity (speed)You can also work out maximum or minimum values. When dy/dx =0 you have a turning point (or inflection).
