Deforestation:

  • Deforestation refers to the decrease in forest areas across the world that are lost for other uses such as agricultural croplands, urbanization, mining activites.
  • Deforestation refers to the cutting, clearing, and removal of rainforest or related ecosystem a into less biodiversity ecosystem .
  • Greatly accelerated by huam activites since 1960, deforestation has been negatively affecting natural ecosystems, biodiversity and the climate.

Causes of deforestation:

  • Multiple factors, either of human or natural origin, cause deforestation.
  • Natural factors include natural forest fires or parasite caused disease which can result in deforestation.
  • According to the Food and Agriculture Organisation(FAO), the expansion of agriculture caused nearly 80% of global deforestation, with the construction of infrastructures such as roads or dams, together with mining activites and urbanization.

                           Logging

                           Mining

                           Oil and gas extraction

                           Cattle ranching

                            Agriculture: cash crop

Consequences:

  • Extinctions, plants, animals, insects, indigenous peoples etc...
  • Habitation fragmentation: This disturbs the animals habitat and may force them to enter habitat which is already occuoied.
  • Soil erosion occurs when trees and plants are removed.
  • Changes in watershed geomorphology.

If the current rate of deforestation continuse, the world's rain forests will vanish within 100 years- causing unknown effects on global climate and eliminating the majority of the plants and animals species on the planet.

  • Climate changes .
