Introduction

In the past, the term “demography” as applied in skeletal biology was synonymous with the production of life tables (Jackes, 1992). A life table is simply a tabulation of the number of deaths within various age intervals, which is then used to calculate such related measures as the life expectancy for individuals who enter an age interval, the probability that someone who enters the age interval will die within that interval, or the living age distribution (population pyramid) implied by the distribution of deaths across age intervals.
