Denatured alcohol

Denatured alcohol is ethanol (ethyl alcohol), which is not suitable for human consumption due to the addition of one or more chemicals (denaturing agents) to make it poisonous, bad tasting, smelly, or nauseating to discourage recreational consumption. Denaturation refers to the elimination of property of alcohol (being able to drink it), not its chemical modification or decomposition, so denatured alcohol contains common ethyl alcohol.

Basically, it is denatured because many governments regulate and tax alcohol. Pure alcohol, when used in household products, would be a much cheaper source of ethanol that is readily available for drinking. If the alcohol wasn't denatured, people would drink it. There are hundreds of ways that ethanol denatures. Denatured alcohol intended for use as a fuel or solvent generally contains 5% or more of methanol.
