Tests for an Alcohol :-

  • Sodium metal test -

When we put small piece of Na to the organic liquid, taken in a dry test-tube. If bubbles of hydrogen gas are produced, then it shows that given organic liquid is alcohol.

  • Ester Test -

Organic liquid is warmed with Ethanoic acid and a few drops of concentrated sulphuric acid. A sweet smell (Ester) indicates that the organic compound is an alcohol.

Uses of Ethanol :-

  1. Ethyl alcohol is used in the manufacture of paint, medicine, perfume, etc.
  2. Ethyl alcohol is used as fuel in cars alongwith petrol.
  3. Ethyl alcohol is used as an antiseptic.
