Destructive Distillation

Stronger heating of coal, in the absence of air, is called destructive distillation.

We obtain many products like coal, coal tar and coke through destructive distillation.

Coke : It is a hard and porous substance.

Uses:-

i) It is used as a domestic as well as an industrial fuel in stoves and furnaces. It gives little or no smoke.

ii) It is used for extraction of metals.

iii) It can be used to make fuel gases (like water gas(CO + H2)).

Coal Tar : It is blackout coloured viscous liquid. It is used in manufacture of :

i) synthetic dyes

ii) drugs

iii) explosives

iv) perfumes

v) paints

vi) photographic materials

vii) roofing materials

Coal Gas: It is an inflammable gas. It is used as:

i) a domestic fuel

ii) an industrial fuel (only for those industries which are locate near coal processing units).
