In biology, detritus (/dɪˈtraɪtəs/) is dead particulate organic material (as opposed todissolved organic material). It typically includes the bodies or fragments of deadorganisms as well asfecal material. Detritus is typically colonized by communities ofmicroorganisms which act to decompose (or remineralize) the material. In terrestrial ecosystems, it is encountered as leaf litterand other organic matter intermixed with soil, which is referred to ashumus. Detritus of aquatic ecosystems is organic material suspended in water and piling up on seabed floors, which is referred to as marine snow.

Detritus food chain is a type of food chain that starts with dead organic materials.The dead organic substances are decomposed by microorganisms. The organisms that feed on dead organic matter or detritus,are known as detritivores or decomposers. These detritivores are later eaten by predators.In the detritus food chain, the excreted product by one organisms is utilized by another organisms.

\mathbb{For\:example :}

When dead organic waste is consumed by microscopic organisms like bacteria or fungi.Later,this microscopic organisms are consumed by other detritivore organisms like snails, earthworm and so on.
