Dhamma is a Prakrit form of Sanskrit means Dharma(law). Ashoka followed Buddhism and gave up Kalinga war. According to Ashoka Dhamma was based on religious tolerance, respect to elders, care for the old ones, kindness towards the needy, purity and truthfulness , no Killing of animals. He said no to violence.
