the separation of particles in a liquid on the basis of differences in their ability to pass through a membrane.
One needle will slowly remove blood and transfer it to a machine called a dialyser or dialysis machine. The dialysis machine is made up of a series of membranes that act as filters and a special liquid called dialysate. The membranes filter waste products from your blood, which are passed into the dialysate fluid.

In case of kidney failure an artficial kidney can be used. An artificial kidney is a device to remove nitrogenous waste products from the blood through dialysis.

These articial kidneys contain a number of tubes with a semi-permeable lining, suspended in a tank filled with dialysing fluid. This fluid has the same osmotic pressure as blood except that it is devoid of nitrogenous wastes. The patient's blood is passed through these tubes. by the process of diffusion the waste prpoducts from the blood pass into the dialysing fluid. The purified blood is then pumped back into the patient's body.

This is similar to how a kidney functions and filters the blood.
