Diatoms are members of Protista belonging to Chrysophytes. Their cell walls are embedded with silicon dioxide (silica) which makes it indestructible. Their cell wall deposit gets accumulated which is called diatomaceous earth. This is beneficial to us in polishing, filtration of oils and syrups. Diatoms are the chief producers of the oceans.
