  • Dicotyledon, byname dicot, any member of the flowering plants, or angiosperms, that has a pair of leaves, or cotyledons, in the embryo of the seed. Most common garden plants, shrubs and trees, and broad-leafed flowering plants such as magnolias, roses, geraniums, and hollyhocks are dicots.

A dicotyledonous plant (“dicot”) is a flowering plant whose seeds consist of two roughly equal halves, that split apart and form the first two leaves of the seedling.

Dicots include sunflowers, oaks, beans, tomatoes, cabbages, cucumbers, melons, okra, hibiscus, and the list goes on.

Besides dicots, flowering plants may be monocotyledonous (“monocots”). The seedling will not show a pair of first leaves, but a single shoot. Monocots include all grasses (including corn) and members of the lily family. There are no woody monocots.

If you are looking at an adult plant and have no seeds to help you determine whether it is a dicot or a monocot, look at the veins in the leaves. Parallel veins are generally monocots; branched veins are dicots.

Hope this helps..
