A democracy is a country where head of the state is directly elected by the people...Where as in republic the head of the state is not elected directly...Ex: Take the case of India...The head of the state of our country is president ,who is not elected directly by the people of India..so India is a republic ..(Note:The prime minister is directly elected by people which signifies that India is democratic but he/she is not the head of the state.He/she is the head of the govt.) So in short India has a democratic govt. and as the head of the state is not elected directly by the people India is a republic..
