ethanol(C2H5OH) has a functional group alcohol while etganoic acid (CH3COOH)has functional group carboxylic acid...

when the functional group that is attaching is alcohol it is called ethanol. but when the functional group attaching is carboxylic acid then it forms ethanoic acid.
