Ethyl alcohol is a colorless, supposedly odorless liquid with a taste that’s more of a burning sensation than a flavor. Any of a variety of grains and fruits will produce alcohol if left to rot (or, as it’s often said more gently, “to ferment”) and the liquid from the rotting fruit can then be distilled (evaporated inside a heated chamber, and then collected via cooler tubes as a liquid — with successive distillations having more alcohol and less water.)
