atams are the smallest particle of a substance which can take part in chemical reaction while when two or more than two atoms are combined together to form a molecule.

atom is the smallest unit of an element
molecule is the smallest unit of matter (two types -molecules of elements and molecules of compound)

atom may or may not exist independently
molecule exists independently
