Carpels are the basic units of the gynoecium and may be free (distinct) or fused (connate). The term pistil is used in a similar manner to carpel – in some situations the terms are equivalent in meaning but not in others. For example, a flower represented by G 1 has a single carpel or a single pistil. A flower represented by G (3) represents three fused carpels but is only a single pistil (compound).

Difference between carpel and pistil: Carpels are the basic units of pistil. In certain situations, the two words can be used interchangeably but, in certain situations, it cannot be used so. For an example, the words are used interchangeably when a flower has three free carpels and three simple pistils. However, the two words cannot be used interchangeably when a flower has 3 fused carpels because then it contains only one compound pistil.

Gynoecium of Hibiscus consists of 5 carpels which fuse together to form one compound pistil.

Gynoecium of Papaver consists of many carpels which fuse together to form one compound pistil.

Gynoecium of Michelia consists of many carpels which remain free thus its gynoecium consists of many pistils.
