The term direct proportion is used when the change in the values of two related variables has the same sign. Inverse proportion is used when the change in the value of two related variables has an opposite sign

Two values are said to be in direct proportion when an increase in one results in an increase in the other. Similarly, they are said to be in indirect proportion when the increase in one results in a decrease in the other.

  • DIRECT PROPORTION:

For example, in the purple paint mixture, the ratio of blue to red of 4:3. This does not necessarily mean we every mixture would have 4 red and 3 blue cans. It does mean we would have 4 red for every 3 blue cans.

  • INVERSE PROPORTION:

For example, more workers on a job would reduce the time to complete the task.
