Difference between ionic and covalent compounds

  • Ionic compound form by transfer of electron where as covalent compound form by sharing of electrons.
  • Ionic compound form from metal and non metal where as covalent compound form non metal and non metal.

The difference between covalent and ionic compounds are as followings :-

Ionic compounds are generally made of cations or anions.

Covalent compound are formed by sharing of electrons.

Ionic compounds are good conductor of electricity but only in molten form.

Covalent compounds are bad conductor of electricity.

Ionic compounds have high melting or boiling point.

Covalent compounds have low melting or boiling points.

Ionic compounds have strong force of attraction between their ions.

Covalent compound have weak van - der - walls force of attraction between their molecules.

Ionic compounds are soluble in polar medium.

Covalent compounds may or may not soluble in polar medium. They are soluble in organic solvent.

Ionic compounds are :- NaCl, KCl, NaNO3, etc.

Covalent compounds are :- methane, Benzene, Acetic acid etc.
